Turnkey Interiors vs Hiring Contractors
Turnkey interior design vs managing carpenters, painters and electricians yourself in Bangalore: cost, time, quality and who is accountable.
Short answer: hiring separate contractors can look cheaper on paper, but you become the project manager. A turnkey studio costs more per line item and gives you one team that answers for design, site work, timing and finish. For a large home, or if you cannot be on site every week, turnkey usually works out better.
What “turnkey” actually means
In a turnkey project, one studio designs the home, produces the drawings, buys the materials, runs every trade on site and hands over a finished, cleaned home. In the alternative, you appoint a carpenter, a false-ceiling vendor, an electrician, a painter and others, and coordinate them yourself.
The real difference: who carries the coordination
| Question | Separate contractors | Turnkey studio |
|---|---|---|
| Who plans the sequence | You | The studio |
| When trades clash (electrician vs ceiling, carpenter vs painter) | You mediate | The studio resolves it |
| Drawings and details | Often verbal or partial | Full working drawings before work starts |
| Material buying | You, or each vendor separately | One schedule, checked against the design |
| Quality checks and snag list | You | The studio, before handover |
| Single point of contact | No | Yes |
The trades themselves may be equally skilled. The risk sits in the gaps between them: a switchboard that lands behind a wardrobe, a ceiling cut-out that misses the light layout, a painter called in before the carpenter has finished.
Cost: line items vs total outlay
Contractor quotes are usually lower line by line. What they leave out is the cost of rework, material wastage and your own time spent on site and on calls. A turnkey quote includes design, supervision and coordination, so compare the total cost of each route, not the carpentry rate alone.
Questions to ask any turnkey studio
- Will I get full working drawings and a material schedule before work starts?
- Who is my single point of contact on site, and how often will I get progress updates?
- How are changes priced and approved once work has begun?
- What is included at handover: cleaning, snag fixing, soft furnishings?
- Can I see finished homes you have delivered, ideally in my community?
When separate contractors can make sense
A small, single-room job; a refresh where the layout does not change; or a homeowner with the time and experience to manage trades daily. For a full apartment or villa, the coordination load grows quickly.
